Part 6 - Language Exercise
The following questions all deal with the subject of English grammar. Understanding grammar is the same as understanding any other subject; it is impossible to know everything. Even highly experienced teachers frequently need to review grammar rules before lessons. This is simply a part of the profession. For your practice in research, please answer the following questions below. Use complete sentences and feel free to consult any resources you need to help. If you do not own any language books, there are plenty of free resources on the Internet. Don't be stressed if you simply cannot find the answer. For this first assignment, effort is more important than accuracy..
1. Look at the two sentences and tell the difference in meaning.  How is the verb used differently in sentence 'a' and 'b'. How would you teach this to students? (Remember, they don't speak the language so a complex verbal explanation would not work.

a. Mark stopped to drink.
b. Mark stopped drinking.

2. Look at the sentence below. What tense is being used? Why do we sometimes use this verb tense in English?

The ball was hit over the fence.

3. What are phrasal verbs? Why do English learners have difficulty learning them?
4. Explain the difference between the two sentences below. What verb tense is being used? How would you teach these two different meanings to a class.

a. I went to China last Easter.
b. I have been to China three times since last Easter.

5. What are countable and uncountable nouns? Give some examples.
6. Look at this student sentence. What errors can you find with it?

I am wanting go to park and play the Frisbee

7. Explain the difference between these sentences. How does using different articles change the meaning of the sentences.

a. I want an apple
b. I want the apple
c. I want three apples
d. I want some apples

Thank you very much for your time and interest in our program.
We will contact you in a few days.
