Chris offers his ideas on how to effectively motivate students in the classroom. Excerpt and link below.

The concept of motivation and motivating your students is really TEFL 101, but we should nevertheless go over it briefly. It’s really easy for everyone to nod their heads and say ‘yes motivating students is important’, but actually doing it and doing it consistently and effectively is a different matter.

I honestly don’t know where the idea came from, and I surely didn’t give it much thought, but I decided to move to Prague in March of 2009. This decision was one of the best I have made yet, and helped me get to where I am today. After finishing the Language House TEFL course, I did a short stint in Morocco volunteering at a school in the small town of Errachidia. Even though it was short, I fell in love with it quickly and I was able to meet other volunteers from all over the world. I then went back to Prague, where I worked at Park Lane International School for a year and a half.

During my time in Prague I made some amazing friends who I am still very close with today. I even ended up flying back to the States with one of them! Upon my return I applied to SIT Graduate School in Brattleboro, VT. Based on my experience with TEFL and my international work in Prague and Morocco, I was accepted immediately for a Masters in International Education. SIT is an astonishing place with a lot of open minded people who all have unique international experiences to share, as well as incredible professors who share the goal of creating social change and responsible global citizenship.

The choice to move to Prague has not only led me on a path I am extremely excited and passionate about, it has given me confidence and experience to finally find a career choice that I love. The Language House provided such an amazing and close-knit community of people all over the globe, I know once I finish my program I will see all those people again in another part of the world!

Hello Everyone
My name is Mike Hatcher and I took the amazing TEFL course at THL in Prague in October 2010. Coming into the course I had 1 year experience teaching from South Korea and was thinking I wouldn’t learn all that much. But the amount gained from the course was overwhelming! Also had one really amazing month while doing the course!

I am now working for the top school in South Korea, CDI or Chung Dahm Institute. Since I have been working here I have had so many epic adventures and new experiences. Every single day seems like a dream out here and I have the TLH to thank for all of this. I have been offered Head Instructor position at my school and I’m one of the strongest teachers there all thanks to the training received at The Language House TEFL.

The Language House is more than a school it is a place that gives you the keys for all the doors overseas. I am living a dream everyday and am thrilled with what I gained from TLH.

Facebook

In my third year of undergrad, I was desperate for a change. So while a lot of people went off to study abroad, I figured I’d take the semester off and do TEFL instead. I had been to Prague once before, and I could not wait to get back there.

In February of 2008, I got my TEFL certificate and stayed in Prague teaching until it was time to go back to finish my BA (more like be forced to go back- thanks mom!). I got my degree in 2009 and in February of 2010 I returned triumphantly to Prague.

For the next year and a half I worked for a family- who lived on a huge farm outside of the city- teaching their two little kids English. Not exactly your typical TEFL gig, but I defiantly got the job in part because I was TEFL certified and already had teaching experience. My job was basically to create my own English kindergarten in their house, and teach the kids (who only knew a few words when I got there) to speak English. I am pleased to say that both kids (aged 5 and 8 now) are pretty close to fluent!

In two weeks I’ll be getting on a plane to Korea, where I have a job at a private language school awaiting in Ulsan, a southern costal city. I can’t wait to see a new part of the world and experience a totally different culture!

I’d like to go back to school and get my Masters in Teaching someday, but I still can’t imagine settling down in one place for good. My TEFL degree allows me to support myself and travel around the world, knowing that there is a network of other graduates almost anywhere I go.

email
Facebook

I was in the August 2008 TEFL course where I had an amazing time. The people from the course turned into great friends and I am happy to still be in touch with many of them.
I also met my fiancé at The Language House! Great TEFL training and a husband- good deal!

Upon completion of the course in Prague, I taught for a steel company as their principal English teacher and also worked with a small privately owned English school. I made great money, but had a two hour commute which was a little painful when I had to leave my apartment at 4am in the middle of the winter! I find that I am most comfortable working in small companies as opposed to large chain schools, but Prague has teaching positions for all types of teachers and it’s easy to find a company that suits your individual teaching style.

Nikky teaching English

After working in Prague for a year, my boyfriend and I thought our next adventure should be of the Asian persuasion, and we headed over to Phuket, Thailand. Unfortunately, we did not have the best experience here, but I learned so much about classroom management that I’ve yet to be shocked from anything a student has tried to throw at me. A few months of unruly, aggressive teenagers sent us packing and we made up our minds to backpack SE Asia for the next eight months.

Our teaching journey was still not over and once we took a breather from our travels we began the application process to teach in South Korea. After a few months of dealing with red tape while trying to obtain our E2 Visas we changed our plans somewhat and jumped on a plane to Taipei, Taiwan. We found jobs upon arrival and I was extremely lucky to get a position at an International English School that caters to well-to-do business families who live in both Taiwan and the US or Canada. The money is great here, and Taipei is a wonderful city. We are never at a loss for something interesting to do and the city and surrounding

countryside provide any type of entertainment you can imagine.I am currently in my second year with the school in Taipei, and in my second year with the same children. I love watching them learn andgrow (I’ve had them since they were 3 years old!) and while my job is exhausting and stressful at times (I have 18 students that I teach seven hours a day!), I am happy with my decision to live in Taipei.

When I went to The Language House for my TEFL certificate I had no idea where teaching would lead me! I can honestly say that the course changed my life in a way I could have never imagined- I had initially only planed to teach for 6 months in Prague…..

I’m currently in Daegu, South Korea to teach in a public school and I’ve just arrived here in August. Prior to this I lived and taught in Prague for almost four years all thanks to The Language House.

Jemma in Daegu

I headed over to Prague in October 2007 after graduating with the vague plan of teaching abroad for a while. What I didn’t factor into this plan was falling in love with Prague. It is a truly awesome city to spend time. The Language House course really prepares you for the realities of teaching and gives you a great foundation for your teaching future. At first I worked in a couple of language schools in the city which put me into contact with a wide variety of people. I ended up teaching English in the Natural Science Department of Charles University which was an amazing opportunity. Along with this, I spent every summer ‘working’ at international summer camps in the Czech countryside and London. I was glad that I had done the TEFL course as my students responded well to the creative and engaging way of teaching that we had learned on the course. One of the best things is that I made friends for life through the Language House and my Czech students….from the uni students all the way to the 50 year old businessmen!

Jemma in Prague

Now I’m a month into my South Korean adventure and am enjoying every minute. I never expected that taking the plunge and heading to Prague would lead to living on this side of the world. I’m quite new here but I am 100% looking forward to many new and exciting Asian experiences, all thanks to my TEFL certificate! Going home to a 9-5 job really doesn’t appeal!

Asia and TEFL during that experience. China was wonderful, challenging, crowded, aromatic, and bizarre. There was adventure in every day. My students were a wildly creative, curious, diverse group of teenagers that went against the homogenized preconceptions I had expected coming into the experience. I met overwhelming genuine kindness in that culture and despite being glaringly out of place there, I couldn’t have felt more at home.

Because of my amazing China experience I decided to enroll in a TEFL certification course and try another adventure overseas. I’ve been teaching preschool in Prague for the past

year following my certification. I was very happy with my experience at the Language House. It was rigorous, in-depth, personalized, and provided excellent preparation for being aTEFL teacher. The community of the Language House was one of it’s greatest strengths. It gave me my closest friends, which have been my support during this experience.”

Seoul, South Korea

I worked in a private school called BR English. The philosophy of this school involved a form of yoga that sends vibrations through your body and mind. So positive words and sitting in a circle on the floor was crucial. Each class began with 20 minutes of Dahn Jahn yoga followed by 15 minutes of meditation. This process is said to increase brain capacity for learning. I didn’t see the results but it was cool to be part of a cult for a year.

MokDong is a good neighborhood in Seoul that hasn’t got too many foreigners so people still give you free things and discounts just for being American.

Overall, Seoul is an awesome place where you can enjoy nature, night life, Jinji bongs, Norae bongs and DVD bongs but not bongs with drugs…that’s a super super bad thing in Korea There are lots of events involving all you can drink buffets of terrible Korean beer where you can meet locals who want to practice their English.

Seoul is like a country, where every weekend you can just choose a random subway stop and get off and wander around and you feel like you’re in a different city. If you live in Seoul, it’s hard to make it out to the other parts of the country so if you want to explore Korea maybe choose a less absorbing city.

Word of advice to my English speaking friends not from the States, you will get annoyed about the fact that in South Korea, to them, everybody is American. So when you walk down the street, try not to get angry when the locals yell out “Yeah! America!!” or “I love USA”
